Twilight was already a popular book series before it was announced that it would be made into a movie. I myself was already a huge fan of the series. However, I couldn’t imagine just how intense the excitement around this movie would be; thanks to the media. Not since Harry Potter has the hype around a book series been this widespread. Magazine covers, radio and television interviews were all in the bag; the studios must have really worked hard with their public relations people because you could not go anywhere without hearing about twilight in the past few months, especially in the week of its’ release.

The book already has its’ following, that can’t be denied but it was moved along by the frenzy surrounding it. People who hadn’t read the novel were picking it up because it was all the rage suddenly. It was great to see people reading again because even though the economy is doing so poorly people are making time to escape from ordinary life for a few moments.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, the lead actor and actress in the film, have been exposed and out in the open for the past few months. Most of the focus these two people who are not only very talented but also take good photos. Lead Actors Entertainment Weekly even released some collector edition’s covers with pictures of the stars of Twilight. Bella EW Cover

Twilight was huge with radio, particularly in New York. Z100, the very popular music station and home of the Elvis Duran Morning Zoo, really helped hype the movie up. One of their very own radio personalities, Danielle Monaro became obsessed with the book series. Robert Pattinson came in for an interview a few weeks before the primiere and this only gave the movie more attention. The Morning Zoo would mention Twilight just about everyday. Listeners would call and text in just to ask who was the author of this series and where they could find it. Z100 Twilight Page Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, who took on the role of Jacob in the film, were even invited to The Tyra Banks Show. The episode has yet to air, but it’s been reported that an audience member won the car driven by Pattinson in the film. This episode will air after the movies’ release and will definitely attract an audience who possibly hasn’t been stung by the Twilight bug.

The twilight frenzy wouldn’t be complete without Stephanie Meyer, the mother of the fascinating series. Her life went from completely normal to incredible mayhem. She’s a fresh face among authors who have been here for a while. It’s fair to say she has achieved an incredible amount of things that most authors couldn’t possibly begin to dream about. Twilight is a hit; it will go down in history just as the Harry Potter Series will. People will read these books and probably enjoy them more than the classics. Stephanie Meyer owes a lot of her popularity to the media, just as all the people involved in making the film do. The media, in respect to radio, print and television, really drove this Twilight frenzy home. Seeing this huge uproar over a book series I love so much makes me so proud to be a Twilight head. They’re on the Edge, We’ve Hit the Pavement September 22, 2008

On one of Jeff Jarvis’ posts he pointed out that the fails to properly help those in need. I believe that if the major financial institutions are in troube, then we, the regular everyday people, are in an even deeper hole. The government only steps in when a disaster takes place and even then, their response can often be too late. Hurricane Katrina is a great example of the governments inaction to help citizens, even in extreme circumstances. However,  in the case of this Lehman Brothers bank mess, the government didn’t hesitate to bail out the other financial institutions which would have certainly faced the same demise. I hate to admit it but I hadn’t even heard of Lehman Brothers since the September 11 attacks. Lehman occupied a few floors in one of the towers and that was all I remember hearing about them. Last week, I found out that they had to declare bankruptcy because of some bad investments.

Now I have to say I’m surprised that the government decided to bail out AIG and the other financial institutions in trouble when the government doesn’t care to help the average joe. Everyday people such as my parents, who don’t have the luxury of a six-figure salary, barely get any help. I won’t say the government doesn’t offer certain programs for help. The government has programs that can help keep food on the table, pay some of your rent and things of that sort but it’s becoming even more difficult to qualify for any of that.

Many people are up to their necks in credit card debt but the government didn’t cut any of those people slack. Instead, they passed legislation in 2005 (Bankruptcy Reform Act) which makes it even more difficult for anyone to start over. If AIG deserves a second chance, why doesn’t the average Joe get the chance to start over? If companies that see a lot of money are having a difficult time making ends meet, imagine the difficult time the working class must be having. Not only is it expensive to buy a car, now it’s expensive to even drive the car. Gas prices are increasing, groceries are becoming more expensive and minimum wage isn’t going up. I don’t know how the government expects people to live when the costs of renting an apartment have increased.

If the govenment really wants to help us, if the government is really working for us, I think they should figure out what is going on with our economy. We’re in a recession. I doubt it’ll be long before we here the word “depression” said on the television news or printed on the front page of every newspaper. The government is playing favorites and I as a person who isn’t in the “favorites” category am really concerned about what is happening. I’m hoping the government can look down from they’re golden tower of glory and take a look at us down here, the people down on the pavement struggling to make it.
